About JDSA
Nobuyuki Matsuura, D.D.S., Ph.D. President,
The Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology
Greetings
Thank you for visiting the website of the Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology (JDSA). In being appointed President, I would like to extend my greetings to all related parties and those visiting us here online.
The JDSA not only contributes to the advancement of dental care but also operates with the primary purpose of realizing a society where anyone living anywhere in Japan can receive dental treatment safely and securely. Our mission is to empathize with each patient's anxieties and guarantee reliable safety.
When hearing "dental anesthesia," many people may think of oral injections at the dentist or nitrous oxide anesthesia (inhalation sedation). Dental anesthesia specialists support patients and dental care not only in those areas but also in the following scenarios.
Main roles undertaken by dental anesthesia specialists
- Pain and anxiety reduction
For individuals with strong fear of dental treatment, gag reflex, or past painful treatment experiences, appropriate management methods such as sedation (as a method to create a relaxed state) or general anesthesia are selected for each patient to arrange for an environment where dental treatment can be received with peace of mind. - Response to patients requiring whole-body management
Even for elderly individuals, those with underlying conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease, or diabetes, or individuals with disabilities requiring special consideration, safe dental care with minimal burden is provided by alleviating stress during treatment and by continuously monitoring overall condition. - General anesthesia for oral and maxillofacial surgery
In the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, perioperative management including general anesthesia is undertaken, always placing patient safety first via total-care management. - Response to facial pain and numbness with difficult-to-identify causes
Evaluation and treatment are performed professionally for pain and numbness in the mouth, jaw, and face that are difficult to explain with caries or periodontal disease.
Our mission amid Japan's super-aging society
Japan has become a super-aging society, and needs for dental care are diversifying. Amid demands for even-higher quality and safety in dental treatment, dental anesthesia specialists aim to reduce patients' anxiety and fear, providing dental care that leaves them feeling glad to have received it.
Presently, more than 3,000 members belong to the JDSA, with dental anesthesia specialists, certified physicians, registered physicians, and certified dental hygienists active nationwide in Japan. Individuals with anxiety about dental treatment, concerns due to underlying conditions, or those wanting detailed knowledge about general anesthesia or sedation should consult a nearby qualified dental anesthesiologist (searchable via this website).
Against this backdrop, the JDSA responds with responsibility to the desire of everyone to receive treatment with peace of mind. Going forward, efforts will continue as a society to make Japanese dental care safer, gentler for patients, and more reliable.
Value creation through academic activities and talent cultivation
Dental care evolves daily, and the field of dental anesthesia advances rapidly day by day. As an organization engaged in academic research, the JDSA vigorously promotes world-class academic research and supports members' ongoing training, thereby consistently delivering cutting-edge specialized care in clinical settings. Going forward, the JDSA continues to contribute to the development of dental care and makes practical and ongoing contributions to improving local community welfare and national well-being (i.e., mental and physical health and quality of life).
We sincerely appreciate your continued understanding and support.
